The Analytical Foundation Of Agenda Setting - 1757 Words
Introduction: Agenda setting is the most critical phase of the policy cycle and has a decisive impact on the entire subsequent policy and its outcomes. Agenda setting, Birkland suggests (1997, p.11), is ââ¬Å"the result of a society acting through political and social institutions to define the meanings of problems and the range of acceptable solutionsâ⬠. In other words, agenda-setting as a term was introduced by Cobb and Elder (1971) who ââ¬Å"are concerned with how issues are created and why some controversies or incipient issues come to command the attention and concern of decision makers, while others failâ⬠(p. 905). The analytical foundation of agenda-setting can be traced back to psychological theories of priming in work on intellectual transforming of semantic information. , Although policy making is very much a domestic concern involving national governments and their citizens, the international organizations (known as network actors) also are increasingly vital in shaping domestic or national policy choices and policy developments. Network actors help build norms by bringing new ideas/opinions and issues in the policy debates and serving as sources of information and testimony. They help build up issues, set agendas and provide information to create awareness of a problem. This is often done in such a way that it becomes more salient by underlining specific values, facts, and other socioeconomic considerations and how audience members interpret a particular situation.Show MoreRelatedThe Analytical Foundation Of Agenda Setting Essay1833 Words à |à 8 PagesIntroduction: Agenda setting is the most critical phase of the policy cycle and has a decisive impact on the entire subsequent policy and its outcomes (Howlett, Ramesh Perl (2009). OBSERVATIONS OF T.G.I.FRIDAYS RESTAURANT PURPOSE This study was designed to make an observation on a restaurant with an emphasis on objectivity and evidence. Specifically, I will be reviewing T.G.I.Fridays in all aspects of the restaurant including its service, menu and atmosphere. BACKGROUND T.G. I.Fridays is a casual dining chain that has been visited by millions of people since 1965. The first Fridays, which is how it is referred to by most of its employees and clientele, was located at First Avenue and 63rd Street in New York City. It featured red and white stripes, a blue exterior and its name-T.G.I. Fridays. Inside were wooden floors, Tiffany lamps, bent wood chairs and striped tablecloths. The bar area, with its brass rails and stained glass, also enhanced the surroundings. For Fridays interior decor, a full time antique picker did extensive traveling to auctions and flea markets. Memorabilia had to be authentic and, if possible, unique to the area where the new restaurant would be located. The New York Fridays enjoyed an immediate success. First year revenues totaled $1 million. According to Newsweek and The Saturday Evening Post, the opening of T.G.I.Fridays indicated the emergence of the singles age. By1975 there were ten T. G.I.Fridays restaurants in eight states. Now there are more than 575 in 49 countries. (www.tgifridays. com) DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS The results of this research indicate the attributes of the T.G.I.Fridays restaurant on East Henrietta Road in Henrietta, New York. The research findings here fall into seven categories: (a) service, (b) menu items, (c) prices, (d) atmosphere and decor, (e) clientele, (f) physical facilities, and (g) special features. Service When approaching the restaurant, the door is opened by an spg, smiling people greeter. Barbara, who is one herself, stated that the smiling people greeters are unique to T.G.I.Fridays. It was also said that there is hardly ever a wait time to be seated over 15 or 20 minutes. This is even the case during dinner on a Friday or Saturday night. The only exceptions to this time are in the cases of large parties with more than six people. This was all found to be correct. Food is served from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. Application Architecture & Process Design Essay and drinks until 2:00 a.m. (Barbara) After being seated the servers are very quick to introduce themselves and accommodate you. They come right over to you in just a couple of minutes to get drink and appetizer orders. They are very timely, returning with the drinks ordered in just two or three minutes. Promptly they ask if a selection has been made. If no decision has been made, the server is happy to check back in about 5 minutes to take the order. After taking the order, the servers will refill drinks whenever necessary and ask if anything is needed. There arent many chances for them to visit, however, because the food comes to your table in about twenty minutes. At which time they will again fill any drinks and .

Net Censorship Essays - Pornography Law, Censorship,
Net Censorship Most of us have used it. Most of us find it useful, Some of us find it entertaining. Some of us find it offensive. ?It? is the Internet. The Internet has dramatically changed our society. It brings together people and their ideas from all around the world in a short amount of time. It is expanding daily to allow new ideas and thought s to be transmitted quickly and easily with the single click of a button. One can find information on almost any subject there. Yet many people are trying to censor it. The Internet contains racist thoughts, sexually explicit material and much more inappropriate material. But who is it inappropriate for and why should it be censored? In 1996 the Communications Decency Amendment was passed by congress. This amendment imposed a $100,000 fine or a 2-year jail term on anyone who used the Internet to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass anyone else. Pro-censors believed the act to be necessary in order to extend the standards of decency to the new telecommunications device. Anti-censors thought the amendment was acting like the ?thought police.? Recently though the Supreme Court overturned the Communications Decency Act in the civil case of Reno v. ACLU. This new law states that the Internet deserves the same level of speech protection as books or other printed material. Even with this new law in effect many people are still trying and some are succeeding at censoring the Internet. They are creating schemes to block and rate the net. A meeting recently took place at the White House about this subject. Several industry leaders and the government agreed to try to originate a variety of systems to block and regulate controversial online speech. Despite the Supreme Court these leaders are inching toward the dangerous and incorrect understanding that the Internet is like television and should be rated and/or censored. During this meeting many announcements took place. Netscape, a major online server, proclaimed their plans to join Microsoft, a major computer company, and adopt the Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS). PICS is a rating standard that established a consistent way to rate and block online content. IBM also had an announcement: They have decided to make a $100,000 grant to Recreational Software Advisory Council (RSAC), another rating system. They did this in hopes of encouraging it's use. Senator Patty Murray of New York announced of a proposed legislation that would tax civil and ultimately criminal penalties on those who mis-rate a website. What will be the result of all these actions? The Internet will become bland and homogenized. The major commercial sites will still be readily available but those who circulate quirky and idiosyncratic speech, those who create their own home pages or post to controversial news groups will be the first to be blocked by filters and made invisible by the search engines. They will still be there but available only to those with the know how and the tools. Does this material deserve to be censored anyway? Internet users know best what they are looking at. If it offends them, they should move on. The primary responsibility for determining what speech to access and what speech not to access should remain up to the Internet user not filters. Many parents have a problem with their children and the Internet. There are many suggestions and ideas for controlling what they are viewing. The parents should also have they computer in a room where they can look over the child's shoulders every once in a while to check up on them. The parents should put time restrictions on usage of the computer. There are many solutions to this problem. In conclusion the Internet is a quickly growing addition to our culture., It informs, entertains and can possible offend. But with the Supreme Court's ruling, no one should be allowed to censor it. The Internet is a never-ending worldwide conversation that deserves the highest protection from government intrusion.

Promotional advertising In order to boost sales, it is important to incorporate sales promotion initiatives after every 4 months. A better way to ensure promotional advertising takes effect is placing coupons at local daily newspapers (876). This strategy is deemed to attract customers to access and explore other products and service provide by the business. Promotional pricing entails the use of discounts like price and product discounting. Competition pricing This strategy is focused to counter competitorââ¬â¢s prices. The business will identify prices of similar products and services from other competitors and provide a lower price on the same. This strategy can deliver narrow profits, but in long-term can be effective in neutralizing competition. Premium pricing Coffee and tea business are common among middle income earners and the wealthy because of the prestige and luxurious services from the businesses. In this regard, Peetââ¬â¢s Coffee and Tea restaurant business will target high-end consumers by providing high-quality products and services at premium prices. This strategy delivers high profit as it targets high spender with premium prices. Marketing programs Peetââ¬â¢s Coffee and Tea will establish a marketing program with an annual budget of $500,000. The marketing program will be responsible for the establishment and implementation of the mentioned strategies. Strategic alliance Peetââ¬â¢s Coffee and Tea restaurant business requires more than marketing strategies to succeed in a highly competitive industry. The business requires strategic alliances such as human reso urce, reliable suppliers, financial institutions and distributors. In this regard, the business requires having strategic pool of personnel as human resource. The department in charge of human resource management will have policies on hiring qualified personnel, general management, training and development of the same (877). Primary criticisms of American Cinema and Griffith's montage by Sergei Assignment
Primary criticisms of American Cinema and Griffith's montage by Sergei Eisenstein - Assignment Example At the core of their opinions, the ideas have come out of different philosophies asserting the importance of arts and esthetic medium to provide education or entertainment to people. In later age, as the American cinema was highly influenced with its industrial structure American Cinema tended more and more towards the entertainment which could provide good returns of investment in filmmaking. On the other hand, Russian cinema had devoted much to the ideas which regarding cinema as a medium of awareness and provoking. Due to such difference of opinions, Sergei Eisenstein, who was most profound of early Russian filmmakers had critiqued some of the concepts developed and defined by D.W. Griffith. One very important part of that criticism was Eisensteinââ¬â¢s criticism of Griffithââ¬â¢s theory of montage. In the modern day theory of montage Sergei Eisensteinââ¬â¢s assumption for montage are widely accepted for providing a ground for cinematic understanding for fast cutting and expression through montages. As followers to Griffithââ¬â¢s theories Sergei Eisenstein had developed Montage theory according to his philosophical set back based in Hegel and Marx. Although, developed over Griffithian grammar, Eisensteinââ¬â¢s theory to montage shows some contrasting difference as well. Utilization of montages in Griffithian Cinema In a modern day scenario, the term montage briefly suggest a number of small sized shots arranged in a manner to express a particular part of story or an effect. The montages are quite common is almost all the movies made nowadays. Depending on its use and requirement montage may be musical, action packed, blurred or deluding. A profound example of modern montages include David Fincherââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËFight Clubââ¬â¢ (Pitt 1999) using a sequence of shots expressing protagonist Jackââ¬â¢s nausea from its surrounding and further his remembrance of his own past that he had been unaware of. Another example contains Martin Scorseseââ¬â¢s depiction of police training in ââ¬ËThe Departedââ¬â¢ (Nicholson 2006). D.W. Griffithââ¬â¢s earlier movies are supposed to set the basic grammar of cinema. There are number of occasions when Griffith has used sequencing shots without a direct connectivity of moment. Griffithââ¬â¢s montages were involved in compressing the happening of an event. However, without giving much for dialectical montages or other philosophical esthetical presentations, Griffith had designs the base for montage which could already establish montage as a different and particular approach to cinematic timeline. Anyways, the conceptualization and development of those theories is due to Sergei Einstein. How Eisenstein could identify power of Griffithian montage and could be motivated to enhance his own montage theory comes out in his quote I canââ¬â¢t recall who speaks with whom in one of the street scenes of the modern story of Intolerance. But I shall never forget the mask of the passer-by with nose pointed forward between spectacles and straggly beard, walking with hands behind his back as if he were manacled. As he passes he interrupts the most pathetic moment in the conversation of the suffering boy and girl. I can remember next to nothing of the couple, but

A Prominent Leader Essay Example for Free
A Prominent Leader Essay This paper will entirely focus on Oprah Winfrey. Oprah Winfrey has shone and demonstrated more strength, character, and changed the way America looks at and views racial issues in America. This paper will analyze her start in the film industry, her leadership, personal wealth, Business Leadership Oprah Winfrey is a reputable, prominent world leader, businesswoman, actress, philanthropist, and talk show-host. It is said by some that she has revolutionized television talk show. One has to admire her perseverance to overcome the hardships she faced as a child. Oprahââ¬â¢s mother had Oprah when she was only a teenager in a town in rural Mississippi. She was born into poverty and raped at a young age of nine years old. History repeats itself and a young teenage Oprah gives birth to a child that dies. Oprah started her career in radio. Today women turn to Oprah for self-help, self-improvement, compassion, religious questions, and even how to regulate your bowel movements. Against all odds in a male dominated field, Oprah rises to have the most-popular, longest running, and highest-ranking talk show. CNN, Time Magazine, and Life all list Oprah Winfrey as the most influential woman in the world. (Finz, 2011). Oprah Winfrey would be an example of a Transformational leader. Transformational leaders influence, inspire, move, and literally transform followers to achieve organizational goals beyond their self-interests (Burns, 1978), thus initiating and bringing about positive change. (Weiss, 2011). She was very much involved in Civil Rights, and changed the way African ââ¬â Amrericans are treated. Her endorsement of President Obama brought about a post-racial era long before we would have seen. (Zak, 2011) Oprah demonstrates characteristics of a transformational leader by demonstrating the four Iââ¬â¢s of a Transformational leader. The first I is Idealized Influence which is probably the most obvious trait. Oprah routinely fosters trust and you admire her strength and feel a sense of pride for some of the subjects she touches on. For example, I remember once seeing a show on gay/lesbians. It literally changed the entire way I view them. I used to think they wanted attention and they choose to go against what we as a society think is acceptable or not. After her show I realize they donââ¬â¢t want to be different they just want to be accepted. The second I is for Inspirational Motivation. Oprah rallies people everyday across America inspiring and motivating people. The third I is for Intellectual stimulation. In my opinion this is obvious through her belief and promoting President Obama during his presidency. Who really thought an African American would be president in our lifetime? Finally the last I is for Individualized consideration. She constantly is taking on sensitive subjects. I remember one show where she interviewed a boy who had been locked in a wire cage for several hours a day. She was able to tell his story and let him maintain his dignity even though horrific things were done to him. Oprahââ¬â¢s ratings prove she has the following and believers a Transformational leader has. Through the last twenty- five years we have seen an African American take over the media and change daytime talk shows.
